Mixed martial arts has exploded internationally in the last 10 years and is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK with top UK fighters competing internationally at the highest level. However very little is understood about the physical requirements of the sport. This workshop shares some of the lessons learned through around 8 years of involvement in the preparation of these athletes from a practising S&C coach.
In this workshop you will learn:
The physical demands of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) including the strength, power and endurance requirements of professional MMA.
How to programme for your fight camp depending on the time you have available, this will include where to place the emphasis at certain times and how to evaluate progress during the camp.
How to assess and evaluate your athlete’s strengths and weaknesses from a physical perspective.
‘Fighting Fit’ standards and milestones that fighters should be aiming to achieve before they get to fight day.
Common injury sites and how to combat this through strength and conditioning.
Weightcutting: How to programme training to prevent weight gain, and the specific nutritional strategies used by fighters to cut weight.
Athletic development considerations for amateur, semi-pro and pro fighters and where to place the physical emphasis during different stages of a fighters career.
Practical lifting technique covering all major lifts required for MMA performance.
How to design S&C sessions for fighters that cover the physical components required to train these athletes.
Brendan Chaplin is currently the head strength and conditioning (S&C) coach for Leeds Metropolitan University where he delivers to athletes from a variety of sports including high performance badminton, superleague Netball, and is the S&C Lead for the TASS hub-site based at Leeds Met.
He is also the S&C coach for many professional fighters including stand-outs Danny Mitchell, Qasim Shafiq, Bruno Carvalho, Jay Furness, Niko Gjoka and many more, and semi-professional and amateur MMA fighters from around the region. The fighters he works with compete internationally and nationally on the nations biggest shows including Cage Warriors and BAMMA.
Prior to his current roles he has worked as a strength and conditioning coach for Huddersfield Giants Rugby League, the English Institute of Sport, Durham University, British Tennis (the Lawn Tennis Association) and has worked with many national governing bodies and sports teams as a coach, coach educator, and consultant.
He is an accredited strength and conditioning coach through the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA), he also holds the CSCS qualification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Academically he has a masters degree in strength and conditioning through the University of Bolton. He is a keen martial artist having trained in Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Olympic Wrestling, Judo and many other forms of martial arts for over 10 years and is a qualified wrestling and boxing coach as well as a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
